Fans were shocked when Lauren Zizes quit New Directions in the season three premiere given the fact she’d become such an integral character throughout Glee’s sophomore season. At the time, creator Ryan Murphy promisedthat while actress Ashley Fink’s episode order had been reduced, she “has a major story with Chris Colfer” coming up.
Well, that never materialized and Lauren has been completely M.I.A. from Glee since October’s Asian F. And according to Ashley, fans won’t get “Zized” again this season — or probably ever.
“It is what it is,” Fink told me at Saturday’s Struck By Lightning premiere. “Lauren’s somewhere in that school, she’s just not on camera or being talked about [laughs]. She’s involved in activities that aren’t televised.”
And no one is sadder about this turn of events that Lauren. “Of course I miss me on Glee. I miss everybody. I miss the fun experience that show is. But Glee is very much a fly by the seat of your pants [operation] in the way that best laid plans never quite come together. They have so many [characters] to take care of and I think once they made the decision that all these characters were going to graduate, it shifted the way this season was going to go. I haven’t heard anything from Ryan, but I visited [while they were filming] prom, so I got to see everybody, which was great.”
Sadly those hoping to see Lauren lurking in the background will be sorely disappointed. When I asked if she snuck into a crowd shot while hanging around set, Ashley laughed. “No! Are you kidding me? I didn’t have to be wearing a dress so I didn’t wear one.”
But even that couldn’t suppress Lauren’s ear-to-ear smile on Saturday night, as Chris Colfer (“he’s the cheese to my macaroni”) premiered Struck By Lightning, which he stars in and wrote, at The Tribeca Film Festival. “It’s amazing, he’s a 20 year old savant,” she cooed about her bestie. “I worked the hours of Glee dude, I didn’t have time to do anything but sleep, but he was casting a movie and writing a book in between performances. It’s crazy. I’m so proud of him.”
Members of the cast hit up the 20th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing party as well as other parties throughout the evening. Keep checking back for updates!
More pictures to come as they’re posted! Note: I am only posting pictures that the cast themselves put on Twitter. I’m sure if you do a quick twitter search you’ll find more.
Ashley Fink, Iqbal Theba, and Josh Sussman were on hand to host Fashion’s Night Out at the Beverly Center in LA last night . Looks like it was a smash hit!
Sources confirm to TVLine exclusively that Ashley Fink’s screen time will be drastically reduced following the Sept. 20 season premiere, which finds her recurring (and somewhat polarizing) character, Lauren Zizes, abruptly [MAJOR SPOILER ALERT] quitting New Directions and breaking up with her steady beau Puck (Mark Saling), who spent much of Season 2 wooing the demanding, plus-sized tough girl.
The news comes a week after Fox released the show’s official Season 3 gallery pics, which featured practically every major cast member — including recurring performers Dot Marie Jones and Lauren Potter — but not Fink.
Lauren’s sudden estrangement from the New Directions crew marks a dramatic turnaround from Season 2, where her character was frequently front and center — fist-fighting with Santana, briefly serving as a manager to Mercedes, and even scoring a solo on “I Know What Boys Like.” In fact, Fink often had more screen time than established series regulars like Amber Riley.
So what’s going on? A Glee spokesperson declined to comment and Fink’s camp could not be reached. An insider, however, downplays the news, maintaining that as a recurring player, Fink’s storyline ebbs and flows much the same way Max Adler’s (Karofsky) does. Additionally, the show has to service 16 regulars, as well as arcs for four Glee Project winners. And that’s not even including new recurring castmembers Vanessa Lengies and LaMarcus Tinker.
Ashley Fink, who you probably know as sass-master Lauren Zizes on Glee, has had quite the year!
From going to her first Golden Globes ceremony, to touring the country (and then some!) with the whole Glee gang, there is much more in store for her in the coming months.
Ash just started filming the third season of the hit FOX show, and Celebuzz was lucky enough to snag some time with her to get some scoop on the highly-anticipated third season, favorite tour memories and much more!
What was your favorite moment from the tour?
I had too many favorite moments to count! In all honesty the tour was, so far, my favorite Glee experience. Performing, “Don’t Stop Believing” with the rest of the cast was pretty special, because that song IS Glee! But also.. I guess my, “favorite” moment every night was coming out the side of the stage to watch Chris Colfer do “Single Ladies.” I watched every single performance of that number, it was special every night and from the vantage point of where I was standing I really got to see the faces of the audience. Or the last night in Dublin It was sort a free for all. We threw away the rule book and just sang and laughed together. Boys had their shirts off..there were water guns involved. All in all it was a great time.
You said you had never traveled to Europe, did you have any culture shock?
No! Funny enough there wasn’t! The sound of excited teens screaming is the same in every country! [Laughs] However there was not ice like anywhere in the UK. You ask for iced coffee and they look at you like you’ve gone insane. THAT was shocking.
How is it being back on set for season 3? What scoop can you give us?
Because we lived Glee all summer it didn’t really feel like we were gone! However the first day back did feel like the first day of school.. Like butterflies in your tummy, plan your outfit the night before. Sadly, I have no scoop however I’m really excited for Season 3!
Yuck, the title of this article annoys me but whatever…
“I’m no sucker,” Fink said and then laughed during a recent interview in Los Angeles.
Fink brings the same irreverent sense of humor to her “Glee” character, Lauren Zizes. The 24-year-old began the recurring role as the plus-sized high school student in the hit show’s first season. Last year, Lauren joined New Directions and embarked on a romance with Puck (Mark Salling). Before Lauren would date the football player, however, she insisted that Puck court her.
“Lauren is atypical for people on television, but the fact is, she’s not atypical in life,” Fink said. “She’s the only adolescent girl who demanded a guy respect her and demand a guy step up. I think part and parcel to the whole high school experience is self-esteem issues. So for the character of Lauren to have the self-esteem I think is brilliant.”
The Houston native previously had roles in the ABC Family series “Huge” and the movie “You Again.” But nothing compares to “Glee.”
“Looking at my life a year ago and now, it’s crazy to think about,” she said. “The response I’ve gotten from the fans is an overwhelming sense of feeling that they’re represented whether they’re chubby, whether they’re not. Anyone that’s ever felt ‘other.’ ”
She doesn’t stress about being a role model. “I don’t wake up and think, ‘I’m going to be plus-sized and I’m going to be on “Glee.” ’ I wake up and I’m me. I’m totally happy to represent and I’m honored.”
The 24-year-old, who also can be seen in “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie,” recently returned to the set to begin filming the show’s third season. She doesn’t know what’s in store for Lauren, if she’ll graduate this year or even how many episodes she will be in this season.
“I’ve never known,” she said. “I know it’s so cliche and people are always like, ‘God, you’re so boring.’ But I’m just so happy to be there and hang out with all the kids and sing and dance. I don’t worry about it too much.”
