The father of Glee actress Charice Pempengco was stabbed to death in the Philippines after a run-in with another man in a grocery store, the Associated Press reports.
Ricky Pempengco, 40, was shopping in San Pedro township when he bumped into Angel Capili, who allegedly stabbed Pembengco in the chest and back with an ice pick, said Laguna province police chief, Senior Supt. Gilbert Cruz.
Capili then fled the scene, and a manhunt has since been launched, with a reward of 20,000 pesos ($470) for information leading to his arrest.
According to Cruz, the killing appeared random.
Charice Pempengco, 19, who plays Sunshine Corazon on Glee, was estranged from her father.
“I want to thank my fans from around the world for their support and love at this very difficult time for my family and I,” the singer said in a statement. “We are all very sad about this terrible tragedy.”
In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2008, she recalls being a 3-year-old girl and recalls him threatening and choking her mother. She says the argument escalated and remembers her father pointing a shotgun at her mother. “My dad was about to shoot my mom, and I couldn’t do anything,” she told Oprah at the time.
After that incident, Charice and her mother escaped. “We left my dad, and after that, I never saw him and I don’t want to see him,” she said.
After learning of her father’s death, however, she canceled a scheduled performance in Singapore to fly back to the Philippines and be with her family after the tragedy.
“Last night, I was with somebody that looked like my dad,” she Tweeted in Tagalog and some English on Monday night.
“I didn’t know that my dad was trying to make his presence felt. I just want you to know that we had a really great relationship before all the trouble started. My mother didn’t know that when I was young, my father told me that he wanted me to be a soldier because I’m a fearless woman. I loved him, and I will still love him. He’s still my dad after all.”
If Justin Bieber isn’t proof enough that the internet has revolutionized the road to fame, look no further than Charice, the original online sensation! After her performances on “Little Big Star” went viral, she was invited onto Korean talent show “Star King,” then “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and finally “Oprah.” And while it doesn’t get bigger than the Queen of Daytime, things did get better for Charice after that.
Her international following lobbied for, and in many ways helped win her, a role on Fox’s musical juggernaut “Glee.” Last night marked her character’s triumphant return as well as the debut of a commercial for her collaboration with ACUVUE 1 Day.
As part of ACUVUE’s 1 Day contest, a lucky fan will win the chance to be featured in Charice’s music video for “One Day,” her original song, produced by Nick Jonas. PopWrap caught up with the pint-sized sensation to find out what made her offer up this once in a lifetime opportunity, who she dreams of sharing the stage with and why she spends so much time pinching herself.
PopWrap: It’s pretty cool that you’re offering a fan the chance to be in your new music video — how’d that idea come together?
Charice: Acuvue asked me to be a part of it and I’m very excited about it because it’s about teens reaching for their dreams. I can totally relate to that because I was just like these fans, dreaming about being a pop star. Now that I’m on “Glee,” shooting a movie and everything else, I want to share it with others. That’s why this Acuvue campaign is perfect for me and for my fans out there. It’s amazing.
PW: What does the song “One Day” mean to you?
Charice: It’s the song of my life [laughs]. Nick Jonas really did an amazing job — I’m so happy I had the chance to record it. My favorite line of that song is “one day I’ll make you a believer, I got all I need, don’t try to tell me I can’t.” You’re telling this person that no one can stop you from dreaming – you’re not going to let them bring you down. I can totally relate to that. I’ve been there a lot.
PW: Your fans have obviously been listening to you sing covers for years on YouTube, but how do you feel now that they’ll finally get to hear original music?
Charice: I love singing covers but it’s very important for me to show people that I can sing original songs too. It’s one of my dreams and I’m very excited that it’s finally happening.
PW: Pia Toscano recently said she’d love to perform a duet with you, has “American Idol” reached out about coming on the finale.
Charice: I heard that Pia said that – I think it’s so sweet and I would love to perform with her. I haven’t heard from “Idol” yet, but hopefully I will!
PW: What about you — who is an artist you’d love to duet with?
Charice: I would love to do a duet with Lady GaGa or Beyonce! I love them so much – Lady GaGa is an amazing artist, songwriter, everything – she’s perfect. Same for Beyonce.
PW: So performing “Telephone” on “Glee” was like the perfect song!
Charice: I know! When they gave me that song I couldn’t believe it. They always seem to give me my favorite songs [laughs]. It’s amazing.
PW: What’s another song you’d love to sing on the show when/if Sunshine comes back?
Charice: Well, Sunshine will be back this season, but I can’t tell you when. And of course I’d love to sing my own song “Before It Explodes,” that was written by Bruno Mars. The song is heartbreaking but very powerful and I think it would be perfect for “Glee” because they’re all about those big, powerful songs. But of course we all know they’re the ones who are choosing the music.
PW: In addition to TV and music, you recently shot a movie role, right?
Charice: Yes, “Here Comes The Boom” with Kevin James and Salma Hayek! I can’t believe this is all happening to me. These are all my dreams and I can’t believe they’re coming true!

Don’t listen if you don’t want to be spoiled 😉
Charice sings “All By Myself” for the “Night of Neglet” episode of Glee. “Night of Neglect” will be the first episode back on April 12th after this mini-hiatus.
I was wondering when we were going to see her again…
“Glee” kicked off its second season with a roster of encore-worthy fresh faces, including Chord Overstreet, John Stamos and Dot Jones. Yet, one much-talked about newbie has been missing in action since the closing credits of the first episode—that pint-sized girl with the powerhouse pipes, Charice (a.k.a Rachel’s glee club nemesis Sunshine Corazon). Last we saw of Sunshine, she had been whisked away by rival club Vocal Adrenaline, and we have yet to receive one call from her on our Telephone. Will Sunshine take center stage on the Fox musical series again? Charice says yes.
During a live web Q&A session today with Billboard.com, the 18-year-old singer-actress revealed that she’ll return to the “Glee” set—likely in January—to begin shooting again. However, she couldn’t have been more vague about the details.
“I can’t say what the story’s going to be. Just watch and see,” Charice teased. “Sunshine Corazon is coming back on ‘Glee.’ We just don’t know if she’s coming back to the glee club [New Directions] or if she’s staying with Vocal Adrenaline, or if she’ll have a love interest.”
A love interest, you say? That was an interesting little tidbit to drop. Now, we’re not saying that just because she mentioned a potential sweetheart, that it will happen, but one does wonder why she brought it up at all, right? Sadly, the boy possibilities are a bit limited seeing as every guy on “Glee” seems to be paired off with someone at the moment. But like Charice said, we’ll have to see. Teenage love is a fickle beast.
Charice went on to sing her co-stars praises, saying, “They’re all nice and very comfortable to work with. It feels great to be around talented people. I just love listening to them, especially when it’s off camera.”
In addition to a return to “Glee,” Charice is working on a second album, which she calls “more dance, more pop and R&B” and will also appear on NBC’s broadcast of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting ceremony tomorrow, where she’ll sing “Jingle Bell Rock.” (The broadcast begins at 8 p.m. ET/PT.)
Congrats, Charice! Can’t wait to see this girl back on Glee. I really liked her!
Although the entire cast of ‘Glee’ has been hotter than ever this year no one has garnered as much attention as new cast member Charice. Her voice is sizzling and ‘Glee’ fans have been waiting for her return to the show.
If you’re a fan of Charice and you want to check her out live, then you’ll be excited to know that you can catch her belting out the tunes at this year’s Q102 Jingle Ball. The ‘Glee’ star has just been added to the lineup which also includes Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Bruno Mars and the coolest glam rocker on the planet Adam Lambert.
So if you happen to be in Camden, New Jersey on December 8th, this is a concert you don’t want to miss. You can get your hands on ticket pre-orders today.
I hope she’s feeling better soon!
The star’s mother tweeted to fans about the status of her child, “she had a slight stomach ache due to the sushi that she ate in the green room.”
Other sources later reported that the singer is OK and she only had to be taken to the hospital for “safety precautions.”
Charice is in Singapore for the David Foster and Friends concert.
Although Charice’s management reportedly cancelled her press conference scheduled on Saturday afternoon, her mom assured her daughter’s fans she will still be performing in the David Foster and Friends concert later.
Sunshine Corazon, aka Charice, made her first appearance as an exchange student on last week’s episode of “Glee.” Her throaty arrangements immediately served as foil to Rachel’s Broadway-ish song stylings –- and prompted a musical catfight that will no doubt extend the rest of the season (until, in true “Full House” style, Sunshine and Rachel make up, become best friends and battle evil with high notes). Charice, the 18-year-old belter who has earned comparisons to Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, was discovered on YouTube and then featured on “Ellen” and Oprah.” Speakeasy caught up with her to chat about Sunshine’s arc for the season.
The Wall Street Journal: How did you end up on the show?
Charice: I auditioned about three months ago. I said to my mom, “why don’t we try to audition for ‘Glee’?” We went to see [co-creators] Ryan [Murphy] and Brad [Falchuk] and I sang for them. After weeks, I found out that I was part of the show through Twitter. I didn’t believe it at first, but the next minute I got an email saying I got the role.
Are you featured in tonight’s episode? How much of Sunshine’s story line do you know already?
I’m not in the Britney episode, and I’m not in the Rocky Horror episode. I might be in episode four or five. They gave me the script for the first episode so far but they haven’t given me the rest.
Do you think Sunshine will be only Rachel’s rival? Or could she take on Mercedes as well?
Mercedes is really great – I could be her rival too.
If you got to choose Sunshine’s invariable love interest, would you pick Other Asian, Puck or Finn?
Actually, I kinda like Artie. Sunshine’s character is a bit nerdy, so I think they would be cute together.
You’ve covered Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Jennifer Holliday. Are there any artists you’d like to cover on the show?
Sunshine would love to dance. I would love to try a Michael Jackson song. I also haven’t covered any Christina Aguilera, but I love her.
Tell Ryan Murphy to write you a pensive moment so you can sing “Reflection” from Mulan.
[Laughing] I’ll have to see how the story goes.
You’ve sung with Lea Salonga before. Do you get lots of comparisons to her?
We’ve worked together before in the Philippines, but no one can be her. She’s a professional and I’m just starting out. I’d sing with her again, but it would be a bit challenging because she’s more Broadway and I’m more of a pop singer.
How much of Sunshine’s wardrobe would we be able to find in your own closet?
Her wardrobe is exactly what I wear everyday. When I saw it, I said, “Oh my goodness, it’s Charice.”
Is it true you’ve never had voice lessons?
Just this year, I got my first ever voice lesson. But way back before I never had one.
John Stamos debuts as a love interest for Emma on tonight’s show. Are there any other actors or artists you’d love to see cameo?
I would love to see Justin Timberlake come on the show because he’s hot. I met him last year and I was right in front of him, but Jessica Biel was there so it was not my night.
